Hi, I'm Chromakode. I am a CS undergraduate in the pacific northwest, USA. I like to make vector art, record music, and code. I am interested in learning new things, and reading about open source software, code, current events, media, gaming, and science. Who are you?

Cool. I'm Joe. Main interest is Jaanix, and everything related to that.

Sharing your interests should be easy in now, just click "share" under the sliders after you're done customizing them. Only the "volume" is shared, all your ratings and tunings remain private.

See what I like on jaanix
once you click on this button your slider tunings will be adjusted so "volume" of your interest in topic will match mine as close as possible, and the system will recommend things accordingly. You can always "clear" to get back to your own settings.

I am Jonathan. I work for Skype and live in the bay area. I spend a little time in Hawaii and a lot of time in Europe. I am thinking we need to have a more social aspect to Jaanix.. but atm I am not sure how that would work. I don't want to see some "me too" friend finder application..
replied 8 months ago60% match | 2 jaas | reply )
Part of a more social aspect would be understanding how what I’m doing not only affects the lens Jaanix makes for me but seeing how it ripples out, who’s affected, etc. More transparent feedback can only be a good thing.
replied 8 months ago60% match | 2 jaas | reply )
Agreed. I'd like the system to expose more of its workings as I use it. However, considering the social aspect, I'm all about growing the sort of rich commenting that made slashdot and reddit so enjoyable. Don't underestimate the power of a smart community!
replied 8 months ago50% match | 1 jaa | reply )
There’s also the screamingly stupid brain-rotting crap that make Slashdot and Reddit a nightmare for the sane to even go wandering by anymore. Seriously, as a prime-geek and an old-school one at that, Slashdot is almost entirely unreadable. Reddit never was. Both because of the inane chatter, ridiculous crap to wade through, and masturbatory self-indulgence of the bulk of the community. Yes, I’m not only a cynic, I’m a voluable one. I’d never underestimate the power of a smart community. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with people.

this might be a good application of the recommender.. let the recommender filter the comments too..
replied 8 months ago50% match | 1 jaa | reply )
I’d certainly be willing to see how that worked. It certainly couldn’t be worse than traditional systems and certainly has the potential to be a great boon. It really needs to let you unfold comments on the main page by default as well.

I like this direction.. Can you be more specific about what jaanix could expose? Some sort of view into the recommender?
replied 8 months ago50% match | 1 jaa | reply )
For stories shown on your front page, jaanix could highlight the tags on the stories it thinks you're interested in. Also, do the blue bars in the sliders show the tags jaanix is weighting based on your votes? In general, I think jaanix should emphasize what's personal about your front page.

Good idea. Yes, blue bars depend on how you rank stories. You can "edit" your sliders, the tags you put there will be highlighted.
replied 8 months ago50% match | 1 jaa | reply )
Cool, I just noticed the highlighting effect. As jchris put it, I think it's a good idea to show more of a "view in to the recommender"
replied 8 months ago50% match | 1 jaa | reply )
Let’s start with the basics: the option to expose, maybe in a pop-up window, maybe with numbers drifting overhead like an MMORPG, what tags get nudged which direction when you click, jaa, or nix something. Some kind of specific exposure of the underlying engine. Couple this with the ability to ask the system “Why is this ranked as it is?” and expose it’s influences and you’d have a much more reactive, malleable system.

I am Alex. Presently in my final semester of getting a BS in CS at an East Coast university. My interests principally revolve around paper and lumberjacking.

I’m Alexander, bizarre Internet talk radio geek, ex-programmer and strong believer in machine-learning energent systems. I do a show Sunday nights called Operation BSU, and generally feed Jaanix a lot of my research stories for the show.

i'm tom, i used to spam jaanix a bit with fun stuff to start the jaanix engines. i think what's missing in a way compared to a /. site, is that usually when i click on a post it always brings me to the original article and i hardly remember there;s this tiny link to the 'post' itself. so i hardly see the comments ever..
further, i only use the radar to set 'recent' to maximum. o yeah and 'wine' to minimum..
i think i -once- clicked on the arrows on the left to posts..
if you look at this discussion for example.. we chat about stuff.. but the only subject to be seen is a one-liner and a picture.. if this were one of the many posts that only has a subject and a picture or just a hyperlink, then we'd have a discussion about those? i think you want more of the 'linked' article on the 'post' page where we are now..
i might be unclear coz i always am, but i see something interesting on the main page.. i click on it.. i have left jaanix..if it was an interesting see or read i might want to comment on it, but it seems difficult to click 'back' on browser, re-locate the item, use a magnifying glass to find the 'post' link and put my comment there..

"reply" on the right of the stats is tiny too, but at least it is one click less. having two step click to the actual story is not an option as most of the time you want the story first. have to think of something.
replied 8 months ago50% match | 1 jaa | reply )
by joe
We're changing the radar so the order of the stories is always fixed (most recent first). The sliders will control what is shown and what is hidden, not the order.

a filter to eliminate trend posting - lolcats etc
replied 8 months ago66% match | 3 jaas | reply )
by joe
just tag them lolcats and nix them - the system will figure it out. raising your threshold in options might help too.

I thought thats how the sytem was supposed to work, but I have tried doing that and they still show.

Must be a bug. What is the points value that you see on these posts? Anything below 3.0 should not be shown by default.

I have my slider all the way down for it and it still shows up.

OK. I figured it out. The threshold checkbox in my options was not clicked by default. I turned it on - set it to 4 - and now they are gone. Whew.

Ahoy. I'm Jonathan, an actor and office drone in NYC. Interests: comedy, mindfulness, transhumanism, synthetic food, and petting my poodle (literally, not metaphorically).
And, of course, bathing in the warm and nutritious pools of the internet. Ahhh.
I look forward to seeing how jaanix evolves. My topic weightings:
See what I like on jaanix
Say, how do I weight a topic that's not one of the top thirty or so that show in the sidebar?

You can "edit" your list of interests under sliders. But if you put an interest that doesn't have that many associated stories it is not very helpful. Saving / posting stuff you're interested in will have a lot bigger impact.

Cool, nice to meet you Johnathan. I enjoyed watching the demo reel on your site! Loved the montage in "Trapped!" :)
